The Department of Chicano Studies promotes cultural affirmation, social justice values, and community service through the breadth and scope of its work. One such demonstration is the EDUCATE Program which stands for Engaged Department's Undergraduates Challenging Access to Education. Through this effort, the Department integrates community engagement with its teaching and social mission by promoting educational access and success in the Latino community. This program revolves around relationships we have established with community education partners and contributes to the educational success of Latino youth by providing culturally and linguistically appropriate resources, experience and expertise while simultaneously enhancing the academic, intellectual and community-based learning of college students.
The EDUCATE Program places university students in the K-12 setting as tutors and mentors in school day and after-school programming and as such engages university and K-12 students with opportunities for mutual learning and teaching. Junior high and high school students benefit on-site tutorial services and interactions with college students. They also have an opportunity to visit the U of M campus in a group setting, where they are hosted by tutors and mentors and university staff and professors. Ultimately, the goal is to instill the idea in students that a college education is a realizable goal for them and that a support system exists on campus to support their success.
Register for CHIC1275/3275 online. Students will receive a permission number via e-mail within 2 working days of submitting the form.
Please see the Community Partners page for a complete description of the sites and links to their websites.
Finally, Chicano Studies faculty and staff share culturally specific or content specific information and knowledge with site directors, parents and staff by speaking at parent and staff development workshops and parent meetings.
The program is based on reciprocal relationship of mutuality and shared leadership wherein community sites receive resources from the Department and the university students and faculty gain tangible experience and insight by working in the community. If you are interested in getting involved with this program or would like more information, please contact the EDUCATE Program Coordinator Gerardo Bonilla at boni0057@umn.edu.
