Casa Sol

Casa Sol is...

A distinguished living and learning community for University of Minnesota first year students, designed to make the University smaller. The goal is to create a fun living and learning community for students interested in what it's like to grow up or live as a Chicano/a or Latino/a in the US. This helps students to learn, remember, celebrate and embrace Chicano/Latino culture. A community is formed in which networks are created, friendships are formed, and support systems shaped to strengthen the skills and understanding of its members. Casa Sol strives to support in-group diversity, challenge outside stereotypes, and guide students to achieve their goals and aspirations.

Students who participate in CASA SOL, which is a collaboration between Chicano Studies, Office of Admissions and Bridge to Academic Excellence Program, the Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence and Housing and Residential Life, enroll in a Chicano Studies course taught by a department faculty in the first semester and in the spring take a course together focusing on leadership. Students will have the opportunity to do a service project with the Latino community in the spring. A peer advisor works closely with CASA SOL students as an on-campus resource and also helps coordinate cultural, academic, and extracurricular activities.
